Howard Town Mill, Glossop

Prior to our involvement Howard Town Mill comprised of a run down
late nineteenth century cotton mill, two listed gatehouses and land
utilised for car parking. The mill and gatehouses are presently
being converted to accommodate new uses in accordance with a variety
of planning permissions, listed building consents and Conservation
Area consents that have been granted to allow the mixed-use of the
site. A range of new infill buildings has also been approved.
Paul Butler Associates have acted as planning consultant to gain
the following permissions:
- HPK/2003/0936 - This granted planning approval for the
conversion of Howard Town Mill to a mix of new uses including
retailing, food and drink, offices and 56 apartments. The same
approval included permission for 1,486 sqm of new build retail
units and associated car parking;
- HPK/2003/1001 This granted listed building consent for
the conversion of the southern gatehouse into a residential entrance
to the mill;
- HPK/2004/0065 Listed building consent for the conversion
and extension of the TIC Centre on Victoria Street into a retail
unit;
- HPK/2004/0071 This conservation area consent allowed
the demolition of the existing portal frame shed structure and
ancillary outbuildings at Howard Town Mill;
- HPK/2005/0484 This approved the re-configuration of floorspace
within Howard Town Mill to convert previously approved retail
units into a Class D1 unit. It also allowed the rationalisation
of the residential part of the mill building, adding 9 additional
apartments to the scheme;
- HPK/2005/0485 Granted listed building consent for the
conversion of the derelict southern gatehouse into A1/A2 or B1
use. It included modifications to the perimeter wall to allow
safe vehicular and pedestrian access to the site including the
removal of two short sections of wall and the relocation of a
gate pier.
